ThisNorthSidecompanylawyer,amanbythenameofParsons,hadbeenfollowingupthemovementsofSippensandoldGeneralVanSickle,andhadfinallyconcludedthattheyweremeredummiesandpawns,andthattherealinstigatorinallthisexcitementwasCowperwood,or,ifnothe,thenmenwhomherepresented.ParsonsvisitedCowperwood’sofficeonedayinordertoseehim;gettingnosatisfaction,heproceededtolookuphisrecordandconnections.Thesevariousinvestigationsandcounter-schemingscametoaheadinacourtproceedingfiledintheUnitedStatesCircuitCourtlateinNovember,chargingFrankAlgernonCowperwood,HenryDeSotoSippens,JudsonP.VanSickle,andotherswithconspiracy;thisagainwasfollowedalmostimmediatelybysuitsbegunbytheWestandSouthSidecompanieschargingthesamething.IneachcaseCowperwood’snamewasmentionedasthesecretpowerbehindthenewcompanies,conspiringtoforcetheoldcompaniestobuyhimout.HisPhiladelphiahistorywaspublished,butonlyinpart—ahighlymodifiedaccounthehadfurnishedthenewspaperssometimebefore.Thoughconspiracyandbriberyareuglywords,stilllawyers’chargesprovenothing.Butapenitentiaryrecord,forwhateverreasonserved,coupledwithpreviousfailure,divorce,andscandal(thoughthenewspapersmadeonlythemostguardedreferencetoallthis),servedtowhetpublicinterestandtofixCowperwoodandhiswifeinthepubliceye.
