           Thestormappearedtoapproachrapidly,and,onlanding,Iascendedalowhill,thatImightobserveitsprogress.Itadvanced;theheavenswereclouded,andIsoonfelttheraincomingslowlyinlargedrops,butitsviolencequicklyincreased.

           Iquittedmyseat,andwalkedon,althoughthedarknessandstormincreasedeveryminute,andthethunderburstwithaterrificcrashovermyhead.ItwasechoedfromSaleve,theJuras,andtheAlpsofSavoy;vividflashesoflightningdazzledmyeyes,illuminatingthelake,makingitappearlikeavastsheetoffire;thenforaninstanteverythingseemedofapitchydarkness,untiltheeyerecovereditselffromtheprecedingflash.Thestorm,asisoftenthecaseinSwitzerland,appearedatonceinvariouspartsoftheheavens.Themostviolentstormhungexactlynorthofthetown,overthepartofthelakewhichliesbetweenthepromontoryofBelriveandthevillageofCopet.AnotherstormenlightenedJurawithfaintflashes;andanotherdarkenedandsometimesdisclosedtheMole,apeakedmountaintotheeastofthelake.

           WhileIwatchedthetempest,sobeautifulyetterrific,Iwanderedonwithahastystep.Thisnoblewarintheskyelevatedmyspirits;Iclaspedmyhands,andexclaimedaloud,"William,dearangel!thisisthyfuneral,thisthydirge!"AsIsaidthesewords,Iperceivedinthegloomafigurewhichstolefrombehindaclumpoftreesnearme;Istoodfixed,gazingintently:Icouldnotbemistaken.Aflashoflightningilluminatedtheobject,anddiscovereditsshapeplainlytome;itsgiganticstature,andthedeformityofitsaspectmorehideousthanbelongstohumanity,instantlyinformedmethatitwasthewretch,thefilthydaemon,towhomIhadgivenlife.Whatdidhethere?Couldhebe(Ishudderedattheconception)themurdererofmybrother?Nosoonerdidthatideacrossmyimagination,thanIbecameconvincedofitstruth;myteethchattered,andIwasforcedtoleanagainstatreeforsupport.Thefigurepassedmequickly,andIlostitinthegloom.
