           Morning,dismalandwet,atlengthdawnedanddiscoveredtomysleeplessandachingeyesthechurchofIngolstadt,itswhitesteepleandclock,whichindicatedthesixthhour.Theporteropenedthegatesofthecourt,whichhadthatnightbeenmyasylum,andIissuedintothestreets,pacingthemwithquicksteps,asifIsoughttoavoidthewretchwhomIfearedeveryturningofthestreetwouldpresenttomyview.IdidnotdarereturntotheapartmentwhichIinhabited,butfeltimpelledtohurryon,althoughdrenchedbytherainwhichpouredfromablackandcomfortlesssky.

           Icontinuedwalkinginthismannerforsometime,endeavouringbybodilyexercisetoeasetheloadthatweigheduponmymind.ItraversedthestreetswithoutanyclearconceptionofwhereIwasorwhatIwasdoing.Myheartpalpitatedinthesicknessoffear,andIhurriedonwithirregularsteps,notdaringtolookaboutme:
