           Thesunhadfardescended,andIstillsatontheshore,satisfyingmyappetite,whichhadbecomeravenous,withanoatencake,whenIsawafishing-boatlandclosetome,andoneofthemenbroughtmeapacket;itcontainedlettersfromGeneva,andonefromClervalentreatingmetojoinhim.Hesaidthathewaswearingawayhistimefruitlesslywherehewas,thatlettersfromthefriendshehadformedinLondondesiredhisreturntocompletethenegotiationtheyhadenteredintoforhisIndianenterprise.Hecouldnotanylongerdelayhisdeparture;butashisjourneytoLondonmightbefollowed,evensoonerthanhenowconjectured,byhislongervoyage,heentreatedmetobestowasmuchofmysocietyonhimasIcouldspare.Hebesoughtme,therefore,toleavemysolitaryisleandtomeethimatPerth,thatwemightproceedsouthwardstogether.Thisletterinadegreerecalledmetolife,andIdeterminedtoquitmyislandattheexpirationoftwodays.Yet,beforeIdeparted,therewasatasktoperform,onwhichIshudderedtoreflect;Imustpackupmychemicalinstruments,andforthatpurposeImustentertheroomwhichhadbeenthesceneofmyodiouswork,andImusthandlethoseutensilsthesightofwhichwassickeningtome.Thenextmorning,atdaybreak,Isummonedsufficientcourageandunlockedthedoorofmylaboratory.Theremainsofthehalf-finishedcreature,whomIhaddestroyed,layscatteredonthefloor,andIalmostfeltasifIhadmangledthelivingfleshofahumanbeing.Ipausedtocollectmyselfandthenenteredthechamber.WithtremblinghandIconveyedtheinstrumentsoutoftheroom,butIreflectedthatIoughtnottoleavetherelicsofmyworktoexcitethehorrorandsuspicionofthepeasants;
