           "ItwasnoonwhenIawoke,andalluredbythewarmthofthesun,whichshonebrightlyonthewhiteground,Ideterminedtorecommencemytravels;and,depositingtheremainsofthepeasant’sbreakfastinawalletIfound,Iproceededacrossthefieldsforseveralhours,untilatsunsetIarrivedatavillage.Howmiraculousdidthisappear!Thehuts,theneatercottages,andstatelyhousesengagedmyadmirationbyturns.Thevegetablesinthegardens,themilkandcheesethatIsawplacedatthewindowsofsomeofthecottages,alluredmyappetite.OneofthebestoftheseIentered,butIhadhardlyplacedmyfootwithinthedoorbeforethechildrenshrieked,andoneofthewomenfainted.Thewholevillagewasroused;somefled,someattackedme,until,grievouslybruisedbystonesandmanyotherkindsofmissileweapons,Iescapedtotheopencountryandfearfullytookrefugeinalowhovel,quitebare,andmakingawretchedappearanceafterthepalacesIhadbeheldinthevillage.Thishovelhowever,joinedacottageofaneatandpleasantappearance,butaftermylatedearlyboughtexperience,Idarednotenterit.Myplaceofrefugewasconstructedofwood,butsolowthatIcouldwithdifficultysituprightinit.Nowood,however,wasplacedontheearth,whichformedthefloor,butitwasdry;andalthoughthewindentereditbyinnumerablechinks,Ifounditanagreeableasylumfromthesnowandrain.

           "Here,then,Iretreatedandlaydownhappytohavefoundashelter,howevermiserable,fromtheinclemencyoftheseason,andstillmorefromthebarbarityofman.AssoonasmorningdawnedIcreptfrommykennel,thatImightviewtheadjacentcottageanddiscoverifIcouldremaininthehabitationIhadfound.Itwassituatedagainstthebackofthecottageandsurroundedonthesideswhichwereexposedbyapigstyandaclearpoolofwater.Onepartwasopen,andbythatIhadcreptin;butnowIcoveredeverycrevicebywhichImightbeperceivedwithstonesandwood,yetinsuchamannerthatImightmovethemonoccasiontopassout;allthelightIenjoyedcamethroughthesty,andthatwassufficientforme.
