           Maud,whorefusedtostayaloneashore,sleptintheforecastle.WolfLarsenhadsatabout,listeningtomyrepairingthewindlassandtalkingwithMaudandmeuponindifferentsubjects.Noreferencewasmadeoneithersidetothedestructionoftheshears;nordidhesayanythingfurtheraboutmyleavinghisshipalone.ButstillIhadfearedhim,blindandhelplessandlistening,alwayslistening,andIneverlethisstrongarmsgetwithinreachofmewhileIworked.

           "Iwouldn’t,ifIwereyou,"Isaidquietly.

           Heheardtheclickofmypistolandlaughed.

           "Hello,Hump,"hesaid."Iknewyouwerehereallthetime.Youcan’tfoolmyears."

           "That’salie,WolfLarsen,"Isaid,justasquietlyasbefore."However,Iamachingforachancetokillyou,sogoaheadandcut."
