NowonderwecalleditEndeavourIsland.Fortwoweekswetoiledatbuildingahut.Maudinsistedonhelping,andIcouldhaveweptoverherbruisedandbleedinghands.Andstill,Iwasproudofherbecauseofit.Therewassomethingheroicaboutthisgently-bredwomanenduringourterriblehardshipandwithherpittanceofstrengthbendingtothetasksofapeasantwoman.ShegatheredmanyofthestoneswhichIbuiltintothewallsofthehut;also,sheturnedadeafeartomyentreatieswhenIbeggedhertodesist.Shecompromised,however,bytakinguponherselfthelighterlaboursofcookingandgatheringdriftwoodandmossforourwinter’ssupply.
