Therewasahill,notaboveamilefromme,whichroseupverysteepandhigh,andwhichseemedtoovertopsomeotherhills,whichlayasinaridgefromit,northward. Itookoutoneofthefowling-piecesandoneofthepistols,andahornofpowder; andthusarmed,Itravelledfordiscoveryuptothetopofthathill,where,afterIhadwithgreatlaboranddifficultygottothetop,Isawmyfatetomygreataffliction,viz., thatIwasinanislandenvironedeverywaywiththesea,nolandtobeseen,exceptsomerockswhichlayagreatwayoff,andtwosmallislandslessthanthis,whichlayaboutthreeleaguestothewest.
IfoundalsothattheislandIwasinwasbarren,and,asIsawgoodreasontobelieve,uninhabited,exceptbywildbeasts,ofwhom,however,Isawnone; yetIsawabundanceoffowls,butknewnottheirkind; neither,whenIkilledthem,couldItellwhatwasfitforfood,andwhatnot. Atmycomingback,IshotatagreatbirdwhichIsawsittinguponatreeonthesideofagreatwood. Ibelieveitwasthefirstgunthathadbeenfiredtheresincethecreationoftheworld.
