Ihadnosoonerfired,butfromallthepartsofthewoodtherearoseaninnumerablenumberoffowlsofmanysorts,makingaconfusedscreaming,andcrying,everyoneaccordingtohisusualnote; butnotoneofthemofanykindthatIknew. Contentedwiththisdiscovery,Icamebacktoraft,andfelltoworktobringmycargoonshore,whichtookmeuptherestofthatday; andwhattodowithmyselfatnight,Iknewnot,or,indeed,wheretorest; forIwasafraidtoliedownontheground,notknowingbutsomewildbeastmightdevourme,though,asIafterwardsfound,therewasreallynoneedforthosefears. However,aswellasIcould,IbarricadedmyselfroundwiththechestsandboardsthatIhadbroughtonshore,andmadeakindofahutforthatnight’slodging; asforfood,Iyetsawnotwhichwaytosupplymyself,exceptthatIhadseentwoorthreecreatureslikeharesrunoutofthewoodwhereIshotthefowl.
InowbegantoconsiderthatImightyetgetagreatmanythingsoutoftheship,whichwouldbeusefultome,andparticularlysomeoftheriggingandsails,andsuchotherthingsasmightcometoland; andIresolvedtomakeanothervoyageonboardthevessel,ifpossible. AndasIknewthatthefirststormthatblewmustnecessarilybreakherallinpieces,IresolvedtosetallotherthingsaparttillIgoteverythingoutoftheshipthatIcouldget. ThenIcalledacouncil,thatistosay,inmythoughts,whetherIshouldtakebacktheraft,butthisappearedimpracticable; soIresolvedtogoasbefore,whenthetidewasdown: andIdidso,onlythatIstrippedbeforeIwentfrommyhut,havingnothingonbutacheckeredshirtandapairoflinendrawers,andapairofpumpsonmyfeet.
