Andyet,thoughIgaveoverthehopesoftheboat,mydesiretoventureoverforthemainincreased,ratherthandecreased,asthemeansforitseemedimpossible.
Thisatlengthputmeuponthinkingwhetheritwasnotpossibletomakemyselfacanoe,orperiagua,suchasthenativesofthoseclimatesmake,evenwithouttools,or,asImightsay,withouthands,viz. ,ofthetrunkofagreattree. ThisInotonlythoughtpossiblebuteasy,andpleasedmyselfextremelywiththethoughtsofmakingit,andwithmyhavingmuchmoreconvenienceforitthananyofthenegroesorIndians; butnotatallconsideringtheparticularinconvenienceswhichIlayundermorethantheIndiansdid,viz. ,wantofhandstomoveit,whenitwasmade,intothewater,adifficultymuchharderformetosurmountthanalltheconsequencesofwantoftoolscouldbetothem. Forwhatwasittome,thatwhenIhadchosenavasttreeinthewoods,Imightwithmuchtroublecutitdown,if,afterImightbeablewithmytoolstohewanddubtheoutsideintothepropershapeofaboat,andburnorcutouttheinsidetomakeithollow,sotomakeaboatofit; if,afterthis,ImustleaveitjusttherewhereIfoundit,andwasnotabletolaunchitintothewater?
OnewouldhavethoughtIcouldnothavehadtheleastreflectionuponmymindofmycircumstancewhileIwasmakingthisboat,butIshouldhaveimmediatelythoughthowIshouldgetitintothesea;
