NowIwishedformyboyXury,andthelongboatwiththeshoulder-of-muttonsail,withwhichIsailedaboveathousandmilesonthecoastofAfrica; butthiswasinvain. ThenIthoughtIwouldgoandlookatourship’sboat,which,asIhavesaid,wasblownupupontheshoreagreatway,inthestorm,whenwewerefirstcastaway. Shelayalmostwhereshedidatfirst,butnotquite; andwasturned,bytheforceofthewavesandthewinds,almostbottomsideupward,againstahighridgeofbeachyroughsand,butnowaterabouther,asbefore.
IfIhadhadhandstohaverefittedher,andtohavelaunchedherintothewater,theboatwouldhavedonewellenough,andImighthavegonebackintotheBrazilswithhereasilyenough; butImighthaveforeseenthatIcouldnomoreturnherandsetheruprightuponherbottom,thatIcouldremovetheisland. However,Iwenttothewoods,andcutleversandrollers,andbroughtthemtotheboat,resolvedtotrywhatIcoulddo; suggestingtomyselfthatifIcouldbutturnherdown,Imighteasilyrepairthedamageshehadreceived,andshewouldbeaverygoodboat,andImightgotoseainherveryeasily.
