Thiswasamostpreposterousmethod;buttheeagernessofmyfancyprevailed,andtoworkIwent. Ifelledacedartree: IquestionedmuchwhetherSolomoneverhadsuchaoneforthebuildingoftheTempleatJerusalem. Itwasfivefeetofteninchesdiameteratthelowerpartnextthestump,andfourfeeteleveninchesdiameterattheendoftwenty-twofeet,afterwhichitlessenedforawhile,andthenpartedintobranches. ItwasnotwithoutinfinitelaborthatIfelledthistree. Iwastwentydayshackingandhewingatitatthebottom;Iwasfourteenmoregettingthebranchesandlimbs,andthevastspreadingheadofitcutoff,whichIhackedandhewedthroughwithaxeandhatchet,andinexpressiblelabor. Afterthis,itcostmeamonthtoshapeitanddubittoaproportion,andtosomethinglikethebottomofaboat,thatitmightswimuprightasitoughttodo. Itcostmenearthreemonthsmoretocleartheinside,andworkitsoastomakeanexactboatofit. ThisIdid,indeed,withoutfire,bymeremalletandchisel,andbythedintofhardlabor,tillIhadbroughtittobeaveryhandsomeperiagua,andbigenoughtohavecarriedsixandtwentymen,andconsequentlybigenoughtohavecarriedmeandmycargo.
