           Therewerenospringstothewagon,and,consequently,itwasnotlikelytobeverycomfortable;but,suchasitwas,theyhadtotakeit.Butiftheroughconstructioncouldnotbealtered,JohnManglesresolvedthattheinteriorshouldbemadeaseasyaspossible.Hisfirstcarewastodivideitintotwocompartmentsbyawoodenpartition.Thebackonewasintendedfortheprovisionsandluggage,andM.Olbinett’sportablekitchen.Thefrontwassetapartespeciallyfortheladies,and,underthecarpenter’shands,wastobespeedilyconvertedintoacomfortableroom,coveredwithathickcarpet,andfittedupwithatoilettableandtwocouches.Thickleathercurtainsshutinthisapartment,andprotectedtheoccupantsfromthechillinessofthenights.Incaseofnecessity,thegentlemenmightshelterthemselveshere,whentheviolentrainscameon,butatentwastobetheirusualresting-placewhenthecaravancampedforthenight.JohnManglesexercisedallhisingenuityinfurnishingthesmallspacewitheverythingthatthetwoladiescouldpossiblyrequire,andhesucceededsowell,thatneitherLadyHelenanorMaryhadmuchreasontoregretleavingtheircosycabinsonboardtheDuncan.

           Fortherestoftheparty,thepreparationsweresoonmade,fortheyneededmuchless.
