TheCATAPEZ,ashewascalledinChilian,hadtwonativescalledPEONS,andaboyabouttwelveyearsofageunderhim.ThePEONStookcareofthebaggagemules,andtheboyledtheMADRINA,ayoungmareadornedwithrattleandbells,whichwalkedinfront,followedbytenmules.Thetravelersrodesevenofthese,andtheCATAPEZanother.Theremainingtwocarriedprovisionsandafewbalesofgoods,intendedtosecurethegoodwilloftheCaciquesoftheplain.ThePEONSwalked,accordingtotheirusualhabit.
Everyarrangementhadbeenmadetoinsuresafetyandspeed,forcrossingtheAndesissomethingmorethananordinaryjourney.Itcouldnotbeaccomplishedwithoutthehelpofthehardymulesofthefar-famedArgentinebreed.Thoserearedinthecountryaremuchsuperiortotheirprogenitors.
