           MaryGrantatthiscrisisnervedherselftotheresolutionnevertoutterthenameofherfather.Shesuppressedherownanguish,whenshethoughtoftheunfortunatecrewwhohadperished.Thedaughterwasmergedinthefriend,andshenowtookuponhertoconsoleLadyGlenarvan,whotillnowhadbeenherfaithfulcomforter.ShewasthefirsttospeakofreturningtoScotland.JohnMangleswasfilledwithadmirationatseeinghersocourageousandsoresigned.HewantedtosayawordfurtherintheCaptain’sinterest,butMarystoppedhimwithaglance,andafterwardsaidtohim:"No,Mr.John,wemustthinkofthosewhoventuredtheirlives.LordGlenarvanmustreturntoEurope!"

           "Youareright,MissMary,"answeredJohnMangles;"hemust.Beside,theEnglishauthoritiesmustbeinformedofthefateoftheDuncan.Butdonotdespair.
