           "Consul,"saidhe,withoutpreamble,"IhavestrongreasonsforbelievingthatmymanisapassengerontheMongolia." Andhenarratedwhathadjustpassedconcerningthepassport. 

           "Well,Mr.Fix,"repliedtheconsul,"Ishallnotbesorrytoseetherascal’sface;butperhapshewon’tcomeherethatis,ifheisthepersonyousupposehimtobe. Arobberdoesn’tquiteliketoleavetracesofhisflightbehindhim;and,besides,heisnotobligedtohavehispassportcountersigned." 

           "IfheisasshrewdasIthinkheis,consul,hewillcome." 

           "Tohavehispassportvisaed?" 

           "Yes.Passportsareonlygoodforannoyinghonestfolks,andaidingintheflightofrogues.Iassureyouitwillbequitethethingforhimtodo;butIhopeyouwillnotvisathepassport." 

           "Whynot?IfthepassportisgenuineIhavenorighttorefuse." 

           "Still,ImustkeepthismanhereuntilIcangetawarranttoarresthimfromLondon." 

           "Ah,that’syourlook-out.ButIcannot"
