           Whiletheseeventswerepassingattheopium-house,Mr.Fogg,unconsciousofthedangerhewasinoflosingthesteamer,wasquietlyescortingAoudaaboutthestreetsoftheEnglishquarter,makingthenecessarypurchasesforthelongvoyagebeforethem.ItwasallverywellforanEnglishmanlikeMr.Foggtomakethetouroftheworldwithacarpet-bag;aladycouldnotbeexpectedtotravelcomfortablyundersuchconditions.Heacquittedhistaskwithcharacteristicserenity,andinvariablyrepliedtotheremonstrancesofhisfaircompanion,whowasconfusedbyhispatienceandgenerosity:

           "Itisintheinterestofmyjourneyapartofmyprogramme."

           Thepurchasesmade,theyreturnedtothehotel,wheretheydinedatasumptuouslyservedtable-d’hote;afterwhichAouda,shakinghandswithherprotectoraftertheEnglishfashion,retiredtoherroomforrest.Mr.FoggabsorbedhimselfthroughouttheeveningintheperusalofTheTimesandIllustratedLondonNews.

           Hadhebeencapableofbeingastonishedatanything,itwouldhavebeennottoseehisservantreturnatbedtime.But,knowingthatthesteamerwasnottoleaveforYokohamauntilthenextmorning,hedidnotdisturbhimselfaboutthematter.WhenPassepartoutdidnotappearthenextmorningtoanswerhismaster’sbell,Mr.Fogg,notbetrayingtheleastvexation,contentedhimselfwithtakinghiscarpet-bag,callingAouda,andsendingforapalanquin.

           Itwastheneighto’clock;athalf-pastnine,itbeingthenhightide,theCarnaticwouldleavetheharbour.Mr.FoggandAoudagotintothepalanquin,theirluggagebeingbroughtafteronawheelbarrow,andhalfanhourlatersteppeduponthequaywhencetheyweretoembark.Mr.FoggthenlearnedthattheCarnatichadsailedtheeveningbefore.
