ThedetectiveandPassepartoutmetoftenondeckafterthisinterview,thoughFixwasreserved,anddidnotattempttoinducehiscompaniontodivulgeanymorefactsconcerningMr.Fogg.Hecaughtaglimpseofthatmysteriousgentlemanonceortwice;butMr.Foggusuallyconfinedhimselftothecabin,wherehekeptAoudacompany,or,accordingtohisinveteratehabit,tookahandatwhist.
PassepartoutbeganveryseriouslytoconjecturewhatstrangechancekeptFixstillontheroutethathismasterwaspursuing.Itwasreallyworthconsideringwhythiscertainlyveryamiableandcomplacentperson,whomhehadfirstmetatSuez,hadthenencounteredonboardtheMongolia,whodisembarkedatBombay,whichheannouncedashisdestination,andnowturnedupsounexpectedlyontheRangoon,wasfollowingMr.Fogg’stracksstepbystep.WhatwasFix’sobject?PassepartoutwasreadytowagerhisIndianshoes—whichhereligiouslypreserved—thatFixwouldalsoleaveHongKongatthesametimewiththem,andprobablyonthesamesteamer.
Passepartoutmighthavecudgelledhisbrainforacenturywithouthittingupontherealobjectwhichthedetectivehadinview.HenevercouldhaveimaginedthatPhileasFoggwasbeingtrackedasarobberaroundtheglobe.But,asitisinhumannaturetoattemptthesolutionofeverymystery,PassepartoutsuddenlydiscoveredanexplanationofFix’smovements,whichwasintruthfarfromunreasonable.Fix,hethought,couldonlybeanagentofMr.Fogg’sfriendsattheReformClub,senttofollowhimup,andtoascertainthathereallywentroundtheworldashadbeenagreedupon.
