Sometimesagreatherdofbuffaloes,massingtogetherinthedistance,seemedlikeamoveabledam.Theseinnumerablemultitudesofruminatingbeastsoftenformaninsurmountableobstacletothepassageofthetrains;thousandsofthemhavebeenseenpassingoverthetrackforhourstogether,incompactranks.Thelocomotiveisthenforcedtostopandwaittilltheroadisoncemoreclear.
Thishappened,indeed,tothetraininwhichMr.Foggwastravelling.Abouttwelveo’clockatroopoftenortwelvethousandheadofbuffaloencumberedthetrack.Thelocomotive,slackeningitsspeed,triedtoclearthewaywithitscow-catcher;butthemassofanimalswastoogreat.Thebuffaloesmarchedalongwithatranquilgait,utteringnowandthendeafeningbellowings.Therewasnouseofinterruptingthem,for,havingtakenaparticulardirection,nothingcanmoderateandchangetheircourse;itisatorrentoflivingfleshwhichnodamcouldcontain.
Thetravellersgazedonthiscuriousspectaclefromtheplatforms;butPhileasFogg,whohadthemostreasonofalltobeinahurry,remainedinhisseat,andwaitedphilosophicallyuntilitshouldpleasethebuffaloestogetoutoftheway.
Passepartoutwasfuriousatthedelaytheyoccasioned,andlongedtodischargehisarsenalofrevolversuponthem.
