           Byevening,thelogshowedthattwohundredandtwentymileshadbeenaccomplishedfromHongKong,andMr.FoggmighthopethathewouldbeabletoreachYokohamawithoutrecordinganydelayinhisjournal;inwhichcase,themanymisadventureswhichhadovertakenhimsinceheleftLondonwouldnotseriouslyaffecthisjourney.

           TheTankadereenteredtheStraitsofFo-Kien,whichseparatetheislandofFormosafromtheChinesecoast,inthesmallhoursofthenight,andcrossedtheTropicofCancer.Theseawasveryroughinthestraits,fullofeddiesformedbythecounter-currents,andthechoppingwavesbrokehercourse,whilstitbecameverydifficulttostandondeck.

           Atdaybreakthewindbegantoblowhardagain,andtheheavensseemedtopredictagale.Thebarometerannouncedaspeedychange,themercuryrisingandfallingcapriciously;theseaalso,inthesouth-east,raisedlongsurgeswhichindicatedatempest.Thesunhadsettheeveningbeforeinaredmist,inthemidstofthephosphorescentscintillationsoftheocean.

           JohnBunsbylongexaminedthethreateningaspectoftheheavens,mutteringindistinctlybetweenhisteeth.AtlasthesaidinalowvoicetoMr.Fogg,"ShallIspeakouttoyourhonour?"

           "Ofcourse."

           "Well,wearegoingtohaveasquall."
