Butshewasgreatlyembarrassed.Shedidnotknowwhethertheabbesswasaroyalistoracardinalist;shethereforeconfinedherselftoaprudentmiddlecourse.Buttheabbess,onherpart,maintainedareservestillmoreprudent,contentingherselfwithmakingaprofoundinclinationoftheheadeverytimethefairtravelerpronouncedthenameofhisEminence.
Miladybegantothinksheshouldsoongrowwearyofaconventlife;sheresolved,then,torisksomethinginorderthatshemightknowhowtoactafterward.Desirousofseeinghowfarthediscretionofthegoodabbesswouldgo,shebegantotellastory,obscureatfirst,butverycircumstantialafterward,aboutthecardinal,relatingtheamoursoftheministerwithMme.d’Aiguillon,MariondeLorme,andseveralothergaywomen.
