Laportebroketheseal,andplacedthepaperbeforetheeyesoftheduke;butBuckinghaminvaintriedtomakeoutthewriting.
"Read!"saidhe,"read!Icannotsee.Read,then!Forsoon,perhaps,Ishallnothear,andIshalldiewithoutknowingwhatshehaswrittentome."
Laportemadenofurtherobjection,andread:
"MyLord,Bythatwhich,sinceIhaveknownyou,havesufferedbyyouandforyou,Iconjureyou,ifyouhaveanycareformyrepose,tocountermandthosegreatarmamentswhichyouarepreparingagainstFrance,toputanendtoawarofwhichitispubliclysaidreligionistheostensiblecause,andofwhich,itisgenerallywhispered,yourloveformeistheconcealedcause.ThiswarmaynotonlybringgreatcatastrophesuponEnglandandFrance,butmisfortuneuponyou,myLord,forwhichIshouldneverconsolemyself.
