           But,d’Artagnanwasnotofacharactertoallowamantoescapehimthuswhohadtheinsolencetoridiculehim.Hedrewhisswordentirelyfromthescabbard,andfollowedhim,crying,"Turn,turn,MasterJoker,lestIstrikeyoubehind!"

           "Strikeme!"saidtheother,turningonhisheels,andsurveyingtheyoungmanwithasmuchastonishmentascontempt."Why,mygoodfellow,youmustbemad!"Then,inasuppressedtone,asifspeakingtohimself,"Thisisannoying,"continuedhe."WhatagodsendthiswouldbeforhisMajesty,whoisseekingeverywhereforbravefellowstorecruitforhisMusketeers!"

           Hehadscarcelyfinished,whend’Artagnanmadesuchafuriouslungeathimthatifhehadnotsprungnimblybackward,itisprobablehewouldhavejestedforthelasttime.Thestranger,thenperceivingthatthematterwentbeyondraillery,drewhissword,salutedhisadversary,andseriouslyplacedhimselfonguard.
