           Therapidityofhiswalkheatedhisbloodstillmore;theideathatheleftbehindhim,exposedtoafrightfulvengeance,thewomanheloved,orratherwhomheadoredasasaint,theemotionhehadexperienced,presentfatiguealltogetherexaltedhismindabovehumanfeeling.

           HeenteredPortsmouthabouteighto’clockinthemorning.Thewholepopulationwasonfoot;drumswerebeatinginthestreetsandintheport;thetroopsabouttoembarkweremarchingtowardthesea.

           FeltonarrivedatthepalaceoftheAdmiralty,coveredwithdust,andstreamingwithperspiration.Hiscountenance,usuallysopale,waspurplewithheatandpassion.Thesentinelwantedtorepulsehim;butFeltoncalledtotheofficerofthepost,anddrawingfromhispockettheletterofwhichhewasthebearer,hesaid,"ApressingmessagefromLorddeWinter."
