           CahusacimmediatelyrantotheGuardsmanwhomAramishadkilled,seizedhisrapier,andreturnedtowardd’Artagnan;butonhiswayhemetAthos,whoduringhisreliefwhichd’Artagnanhadprocuredhimhadrecoveredhisbreath,andwho,forfearthatd’Artagnanwouldkillhisenemy,wishedtoresumethefight.

           D’ArtagnanperceivedthatitwouldbedisobligingAthosnottoleavehimalone;andinafewminutesCahusacfell,withaswordthrustthroughhisthroat.

           AtthesameinstantAramisplacedhisswordpointonthebreastofhisfallenenemy,andforcedhimtoaskformercy.

           ThereonlythenremainedPorthosandBicarat.Porthosmadeathousandflourishes,askingBicaratwhato’clockitcouldbe,andofferinghimhiscomplimentsuponhisbrother’shavingjustobtainedacompanyintheregimentofNavarre;but,jestashemight,hegainednothing.Bicaratwasoneofthoseironmenwhoneverfelldead.

           Nevertheless,itwasnecessarytofinish.Thewatchmightcomeupandtakeallthecombatants,woundedornot,royalistsorcardinalists.Athos,Aramis,andd’ArtagnansurroundedBicarat,andrequiredhimtosurrender.Thoughaloneagainstallandwithawoundinhisthigh,Bicaratwishedtoholdout;butJussac,whohadrisenuponhiselbow,criedouttohimtoyield.
