           Sheappearedtobeinecstasy,anddidnotpaytheleastattentiontowhatwasgoingonaroundher.Feltonmadeasignthatsheshouldnotbedisturbed;andwhenallwasarranged,hewentoutquietlywiththesoldiers.

           Miladyknewshemightbewatched,soshecontinuedherprayerstotheend;anditappearedtoherthatthesoldierwhowasondutyatherdoordidnotmarchwiththesamestep,andseemedtolisten.Forthemomentshewishednothingbetter.Shearose,cametothetable,atebutlittle,anddrankonlywater.

           Anhourafter,hertablewascleared;butMiladyremarkedthatthistimeFeltondidnotaccompanythesoldiers.Hefeared,then,toseehertoooften.

           Sheturnedtowardthewalltosmilefortherewasinthissmilesuchanexpressionoftriumphthatthissmilealonewouldhavebetrayedher.

           Sheallowed,therefore,halfanhourtopassaway;andasatthatmomentallwassilenceintheoldcastle,asnothingwasheardbuttheeternalmurmurofthewavesthatimmensebreakingoftheoceanwithherpure,harmonious,andpowerfulvoice,shebeganthefirstcoupletofthepsalmtheningreatfavorwiththePuritans:

           "Thouleavestthyservants,Lord,Toseeiftheybestrong;ButsoonthoudostaffordThyhandtoleadthemon."

           Theseverseswerenotexcellentveryfarfromit;butasitiswellknown,thePuritansdidnotpiquethemselvesupontheirpoetry.

           Whilesinging,Miladylistened.Thesoldieronguardatherdoorstopped,asifhehadbeenchangedintostone.Miladywasthenabletojudgeoftheeffectshehadproduced.
