Miladyknewshemightbewatched,soshecontinuedherprayerstotheend;anditappearedtoherthatthesoldierwhowasondutyatherdoordidnotmarchwiththesamestep,andseemedtolisten.Forthemomentshewishednothingbetter.Shearose,cametothetable,atebutlittle,anddrankonlywater.
Anhourafter,hertablewascleared;butMiladyremarkedthatthistimeFeltondidnotaccompanythesoldiers.Hefeared,then,toseehertoooften.
Sheturnedtowardthewalltosmile—fortherewasinthissmilesuchanexpressionoftriumphthatthissmilealonewouldhavebetrayedher.
Sheallowed,therefore,halfanhourtopassaway;andasatthatmomentallwassilenceintheoldcastle,asnothingwasheardbuttheeternalmurmurofthewaves—thatimmensebreakingoftheocean—withherpure,harmonious,andpowerfulvoice,shebeganthefirstcoupletofthepsalmtheningreatfavorwiththePuritans:
"Thouleavestthyservants,Lord,Toseeiftheybestrong;ButsoonthoudostaffordThyhandtoleadthemon."
Theseverseswerenotexcellent—veryfarfromit;butasitiswellknown,thePuritansdidnotpiquethemselvesupontheirpoetry.
Whilesinging,Miladylistened.Thesoldieronguardatherdoorstopped,asifhehadbeenchangedintostone.Miladywasthenabletojudgeoftheeffectshehadproduced.
