           D’Artagnanwasnotsodullasnottoperceivethathewasonetoomany;buthewasnotsufficientlybrokenintothefashionsofthegayworldtoknowhowtoextricatehimselfgallantlyfromafalseposition,likethatofamanwhobeginstominglewithpeopleheisscarcelyacquaintedwithandinaconversationthatdoesnotconcernhim.Hewasseekinginhismind,then,fortheleastawkwardmeansofretreat,whenheremarkedthatAramishadlethishandkerchieffall,andbymistake,nodoubt,hadplacedhisfootuponit.Thisappearedtobeafavorableopportunitytorepairhisintrusion.Hestooped,andwiththemostgraciousairhecouldassume,drewthehandkerchieffromunderthefootoftheMusketeerinspiteoftheeffortsthelattermadetodetainit,andholdingitouttohim,said,"Ibelieve,monsieur,thatthisisahandkerchiefyouwouldbesorrytolose?"

           Thehandkerchiefwasindeedrichlyembroidered,andhadacoronetandarmsatoneofitscorners.Aramisblushedexcessively,andsnatchedratherthantookthehandkerchieffromthehandoftheGascon.

           "Ah,ah!"criedoneoftheGuards,"willyoupersistinsaying,mostdiscreetAramis,thatyouarenotongoodtermswithMadamedeBois-Tracy,whenthatgraciousladyhasthekindnesstolendyouoneofherhandkerchiefs?"

           Aramisdartedatd’Artagnanoneofthoselookswhichinformamanthathehasacquiredamortalenemy.
