Now,wheneverthekinghalted,theMusketeershalted.Itfollowedthatd’Artagnan,whowasasyetpurelyandsimplyintheGuards,foundhimself,forthetimeatleast,separatedfromhisgoodfriends—Athos,Porthos,andAramis.Thisseparation,whichwasnomorethananunpleasantcircumstance,wouldhavecertainlybecomeacauseofseriousuneasinessifhehadbeenabletoguessbywhatunknowndangershewassurrounded.
He,however,arrivedwithoutaccidentinthecampestablishedbeforeLaRochelle,ofthetenthofthemonthofSeptemberoftheyear1627.
