Besidesthis,hehaddrawnuponhimselftwogoodduelswithtwomen,eachcapableofkillingthreed’Artagnans—withtwoMusketeers,inshort,withtwoofthosebeingswhomheesteemedsogreatlythatheplacedtheminhismindandheartaboveallothermen.
Theoutlookwassad.SureofbeingkilledbyAthos,itmayeasilybeunderstoodthattheyoungmanwasnotveryuneasyaboutPorthos.Ashope,however,isthelastthingextinguishedintheheartofman,hefinishedbyhopingthathemightsurvive,eventhoughwithterriblewounds,inboththeseduels;andincaseofsurviving,hemadethefollowingreprehensionsuponhisownconduct:
"WhatamadcapIwas,andwhatastupidfellowIam!ThatbraveandunfortunateAthoswaswoundedonthatveryshoulderagainstwhichImustrunheadforemost,likearam.Theonlythingthatastonishesmeisthathedidnotstrikemedeadatonce.Hehadgoodcausetodoso;thepainIgavehimmusthavebeenatrocious.AstoPorthos—oh,astoPorthos,faith,that’sadrollaffair!"
Andinspiteofhimself,theyoungmanbegantolaughaloud,lookingroundcarefully,however,toseethathissolitarylaugh,withoutacauseintheeyesofpassers-by,offendednoone.
