           D’Artagnanwaswellknownamongthehonorablecorpsoftheking’sMusketeers,inwhichitwasknownhewouldonedaytakehisplace;hewasconsideredbeforehandasacomrade.Itresultedfromtheseantecedentsthateveryoneenteredheartilyintothepurposeforwhichtheymet;besides,itwouldnotbeunlikelythattheywouldhaveanopportunityofplayingeitherthecardinalorhispeopleanillturn,andforsuchexpeditionstheseworthygentlemenwerealwaysready.

           Athosdividedthemintothreegroups,assumedthecommandofone,gavethesecondtoAramis,andthethirdtoPorthos;andtheneachgroupwentandtooktheirwatchnearanentrance.

           D’Artagnan,onhispart,enteredboldlyattheprincipalgate.

           Althoughhefelthimselfablysupported,theyoungmanwasnotwithoutalittleuneasinessasheascendedthegreatstaircase,stepbystep.HisconducttowardMiladyboreastrongresemblancetotreachery,andhewasverysuspiciousofthepoliticalrelationswhichexistedbetweenthatwomanandthecardinal.
