           Alas,likemostthingsinthisworldwhichhavenothingintheirfavorbutappearances,thebaldricwasglitteringwithgoldinthefront,butwasnothingbutsimplebuffbehind.Vaingloriousashewas,Porthoscouldnotaffordtohaveabaldricwhollyofgold,buthadatleasthalf.Onecouldcomprehendthenecessityofthecoldandtheurgencyofthecloak.

           "Blessme!"criedPorthos,makingstrongeffortstodisembarrasshimselfofd’Artagnan,whowaswrigglingabouthisback;"youmustbemadtorunagainstpeopleinthismanner."

           "Excuseme,"saidd’Artagnan,reappearingundertheshoulderofthegiant,"butIaminsuchhasteIwasrunningaftersomeoneand—"

           "Anddoyoualwaysforgetyoureyeswhenyourun?"askedPorthos.

           "No,"repliedd’Artagnan,piqued,"andthankstomyeyes,Icanseewhatotherpeoplecannotsee."
