TheMusketeercouldnotforgettheevilreportswhichthenprevailed,andwhichindeedhavesurvivedthem,oftheprocuratorsoftheperiod—meanness,stinginess,fasts;butas,afterall,exceptingsomefewactsofeconomywhichPorthoshadalwaysfoundveryunseasonable,theprocurator’swifehadbeentolerablyliberal—thatis,beitunderstood,foraprocurator’swife—hehopedtoseeahouseholdofahighlycomfortablekind.
Andyet,attheverydoortheMusketeerbegantoentertainsomedoubts.Theapproachwasnotsuchastoprepossesspeople—anill-smelling,darkpassage,astaircasehalf-lightedbybarsthroughwhichstoleaglimmerfromaneighboringyard;onthefirstflooralowdoorstuddedwithenormousnails,liketheprincipalgateoftheGrandChatelet.
Porthosknockedwithhishand.Atall,paleclerk,hisfaceshadedbyaforestofvirginhair,openedthedoor,andbowedwiththeairofamanforcedatoncetorespectinanotherloftystature,whichindicatedstrength,themilitarydress,whichindicatedrank,andaruddycountenance,whichindicatedfamiliaritywithgoodliving.
