           ThatprettylittleSOUBRETTEwhomd’Artagnanhadalreadyobservedthencamein.ShespokesomewordstoLorddeWinterinEnglish,whothereuponrequestedd’Artagnan’spermissiontoretire,excusinghimselfonaccountoftheurgencyofthebusinessthathadcalledhimaway,andcharginghissistertoobtainhispardon.

           D’ArtagnanexchangedashakeofthehandwithLorddeWinter,andthenreturnedtoMilady.Hercountenance,withsurprisingmobility,hadrecovereditsgraciousexpression;butsomelittleredspotsonherhandkerchiefindicatedthatshehadbittenherlipstillthebloodcame.Thoselipsweremagnificent;theymightbesaidtobeofcoral.
