Likeallthegreatnoblesofthatperiod,Athosrodeandfencedtoperfection.Butstillfurther,hiseducationhadbeensolittleneglected,evenwithrespecttoscholasticstudies,sorareatthistimeamonggentlemen,thathesmiledatthescrapsofLatinwhichAramissportedandwhichPorthospretendedtounderstand.Twoorthreetimes,even,tothegreatastonishmentofhisfriends,hehad,whenAramisallowedsomerudimentalerrortoescapehim,replacedaverbinitsrighttenseandanouninitscase.Besides,hisprobitywasirreproachable,inanageinwhichsoldierscompromisedsoeasilywiththeirreligionandtheirconsciences,loverswiththerigorousdelicacyofourera,andthepoorwithGod’sSeventhCommandment.ThisAthos,then,wasaveryextraordinaryman.
