The Pavilion

           Thethreemenbroughtthecarriageupquietly,andtookoutofitalittleman,stout,short,elderly,andcommonlydressedinclothesofadarkcolor,whoascendedtheladderverycarefully,lookedsuspiciouslyinatthewindowofthepavilion,camedownasquietlyashehadgoneup,andwhispered,‘Itisshe!’Immediately,hewhohadspokentomeapproachedthedoorofthepavilion,openeditwithakeyhehadinhishand,closedthedooranddisappeared,whileatthesametimetheothertwomenascendedtheladder.Thelittleoldmanremainedatthecoachdoor;thecoachmantookcareofhishorses,thelackeyheldthesaddlehorses.Allatoncegreatcriesresoundedinthepavilion,andawomancametothewindow,andopenedit,asiftothrowherselfoutofit;butassoonassheperceivedtheothertwomen,shefellbackandtheywentintothechamber.ThenIsawnomore;butIheardthenoiseofbreakingfurniture.Thewomanscreamed,andcriedforhelp;buthercriesweresoonstifled.Twoofthemenappeared,bearingthewomanintheirarms,andcarriedhertothecarriage,intowhichthelittleoldmangotafterher.Theleaderclosedthewindow,cameoutaninstantafterbythedoor,andsatisfiedhimselfthatthewomanwasinthecarriage.Histwocompanionswerealreadyonhorseback.Hesprangintohissaddle;thelackeytookhisplacebythecoachman;thecarriagewentoffataquickpace,escortedbythethreehorsemen,andallwasover.FromthatmomentIhaveneitherseennorheardanything."
