           Alltheway,andinproportionasthecorridorsbecamemoredeserted,d’Artagnanwishedtostoptheyoungwoman,seizeherandgazeuponher,wereitonlyforaminute;butquickasabirdsheglidedbetweenhishands,andwhenhewishedtospeaktoher,herfingerplaceduponhermouth,withalittleimperativegesturefullofgrace,remindedhimthathewasunderthecommandofapowerwhichhemustblindlyobey,andwhichforbadehimeventomaketheslightestcomplaint.Atlength,afterwindingaboutforaminuteortwo,Mme.Bonacieuxopenedthedoorofacloset,whichwasentirelydark,andledd’Artagnanintoit.Thereshemadeafreshsignofsilence,andopenedaseconddoorconcealedbytapestry.Theopeningofthisdoordisclosedabrilliantlight,andshedisappeared.

           D’Artagnanremainedforamomentmotionless,askinghimselfwherehecouldbe;butsoonarayoflightwhichpenetratedthroughthechamber,togetherwiththewarmandperfumedairwhichreachedhimfromthesameaperture,theconversationoftwoofthreeladiesinlanguageatoncerespectfulandrefined,andtheword"Majesty"severaltimesrepeated,indicatedclearlythathewasinaclosetattachedtothequeen’sapartment.Theyoungmanwaitedincomparativedarknessandlistened.

           Thequeenappearedcheerfulandhappy,whichseemedtoastonishthepersonswhosurroundedherandwhowereaccustomedtoseeheralmostalwayssadandfullofcare.
