           Withthesewordsheheldouttothequeenthetwostudsthecardinalhadgivenhim.

           "How,sire?"criedtheyoungqueen,affectingsurprise,"youaregivingme,then,twomore:Ishallhavefourteen."

           Infactthekingcountedthem,andthetwelvestudswereallonherMajesty’sshoulder.

           Thekingcalledthecardinal.

           "AndIamthemoregratefultoyourEminence,"repliedAnneofAustria,withasmilethatprovedshewasnotthedupeofthisingeniousgallantry,"frombeingcertainthatthesetwostudsalonehavecostyouasmuchasalltheotherscosthisMajesty."
