           Thisbegantobeannoying.Allthesesuccessiveaccidentswereperhapstheresultofchance;buttheymightbethefruitsofaplot.Athosandd’Artagnanwentout,whilePlanchetwassenttoinquireiftherewerenotthreehorsesforsaleintheneighborhood.Atthedoorstoodtwohorses,fresh,strong,andfullyequipped.Thesewouldjusthavesuitedthem.Heaskedwheretheirmasterswere,andwasinformedthattheyhadpassedthenightintheinn,andwerethensettlingtheirbillwiththehost.

           Athoswentdowntopaythereckoning,whiled’ArtagnanandPlanchetstoodatthestreetdoor.Thehostwasinalowerandbackroom,towhichAthoswasrequestedtogo.

           Athosenteredwithouttheleastmistrust,andtookouttwopistolestopaythebill.Thehostwasalone,seatedbeforehisdesk,oneofthedrawersofwhichwaspartlyopen.
