Onhispart,thecardinalwasnotbehindthekinginthisrespect.WhenhesawtheformidableandchosenbodywithwhichLouisXIIIhadsurroundedhimself,thissecond,orratherthisfirstkingofFrance,becamedesirousthathe,too,shouldhavehisguard.HehadhisMusketeerstherefore,asLouisXIIIhadhis,andthesetwopowerfulrivalsviedwitheachotherinprocuring,notonlyfromalltheprovincesofFrance,butevenfromallforeignstates,themostcelebratedswordsmen.ItwasnotuncommonforRichelieuandLouisXIIItodisputeovertheireveninggameofchessuponthemeritsoftheirservants.
