           "Thisinsolentboychastisesothers,"criedhe;"andIhopethatthistimehewhomheoughttochastisewillnotescapehimasbefore."

           "Willnotescapehim?"repliedthestranger,knittinghisbrow.

           "No;beforeawomanyouwoulddarenotfly,Ipresume?"

           "Remember,"saidMilady,seeingthestrangerlayhishandonhissword,"theleastdelaymayruineverything."

           "Youareright,"criedthegentleman;"begonethen,onyourpart,andIwilldepartasquicklyonmine."Andbowingtothelady,sprangintohissaddle,whilehercoachmanappliedhiswhipvigorouslytohishorses.Thetwointerlocutorsthusseparated,takingoppositedirections,atfullgallop.

           "Payhim,booby!"criedthestrangertohisservant,withoutcheckingthespeedofhishorse;andtheman,afterthrowingtwoorthreesilverpiecesatthefootofminehost,gallopedafterhismaster.

           "Basecoward!falsegentleman!"criedd’Artagnan,springingforward,inhisturn,aftertheservant.Buthiswoundhadrenderedhimtooweaktosupportsuchanexertion.Scarcelyhadhegonetenstepswhenhisearsbegantotingle,afaintnessseizedhim,acloudofbloodpassedoverhiseyes,andhefellinthemiddleofthestreet,cryingstill,"Coward!coward!coward!"
