           AstoPorthos,excepthisrealname(aswasthecasewiththoseofhistwocomrades),hislifewasveryeasilyknown.Vainandindiscreet,itwasaseasytoseethroughhimasthroughacrystal.Theonlythingtomisleadtheinvestigatorwouldhavebeenbeliefinallthegoodthingshesaidofhimself.

           WithrespecttoAramis,thoughhavingtheairofhavingnothingsecretabouthim,hewasayoungfellowmadeupofmysteries,answeringlittletoquestionsputtohimaboutothers,andhavinglearnedfromhimthereportwhichprevailedconcerningthesuccessoftheMusketeerwithaprincess,wishedtogainalittleinsightintotheamorousadventuresofhisinterlocutor.
