Butasatthistimethe"Nautilus"wasdrawnintothevortexofthemaelstrom,offthecoastofNorway,thecaptainnaturallybelievedthatthefugitives,engulfedinthatfrightfulwhirlpool,foundtheirdeathatthebottomoftheabyss.HewasunawarethattheFrenchmanandhistwocompanionshadbeenmiraculouslycastonshore,thatthefishermenoftheLofotenIslandshadrenderedthemassistance,andthattheprofessor,onhisreturntoFrance,hadpublishedthatworkinwhichsevenmonthsofthestrangeandeventfulnavigationofthe"Nautilus"werenarratedandexposedtothecuriosityofthepublic.
Foralongtimealterthis,CaptainNemocontinuedtolivethus,traversingeverysea.Butonebyonehiscompanionsdied,andfoundtheirlastresting-placeintheircemeteryofcoral,inthebedofthePacific.AtlastCaptainNemoremainedthesolitarysurvivorofallthosewhohadtakenrefugewithhiminthedepthsoftheocean.
Hewasnowsixtyyearsofage.Althoughalone,hesucceededinnavigatingthe"Nautilus"towardsoneofthosesubmarinecavernswhichhadsometimesservedhimasaharbor.
OneoftheseportswashollowedbeneathLincolnIsland,andatthismomentfurnishedanasylumtothe"Nautilus."
Thecaptainhadnowremainedtheresixyears,navigatingtheoceannolonger,butawaitingdeath,andthatmomentwhenheshouldrejoinhisformercompanions,whenbychanceheobservedthedescentoftheballoonwhichcarriedtheprisonersoftheConfederates.
