Sotheconvictswerestillthere,watchingthecorral,anddeterminedtokillthesettlersoneaftertheother.Therewasnothingtobedonebuttotreatthemaswildbeasts.Butgreatprecautionsmustbetaken,forjustnowthewretcheshadtheadvantageontheirside,seeing,andnotbeingseen,beingabletosurprisebythesuddennessoftheirattack,yetnottobesurprisedthemselves.Hardingmadearrangements,therefore,forlivinginthecorral,ofwhichtheprovisionswouldlastforatolerablelengthoftime.Ayrton’shousehadbeenprovidedwithallthatwasnecessaryforexistence,andtheconvicts,scaredbythearrivalofthesettlers,hadnothadtimetopillageit.Itwasprobable,asGideonSpilettobserved,thatthingshadoccurredasfollows:
Thesixconvicts,disembarkingontheisland,hadfollowedthesouthernshore,andafterhavingtraversedthedoubleshoreoftheSerpentinePeninsula,notbeinginclinedtoventureintotheFarWestwoods,theyhadreachedthemouthofFallsRiver.Fromthispoint,byfollowingtherightbankofthewatercourse,theywouldarriveatthespursofMountFranklin,amongwhichtheywouldnaturallyseekaretreat,andtheycouldnothavebeenlongindiscoveringthecorral,thenuninhabited.Theretheyhadregularlyinstalledthemselves,awaitingthemomenttoputtheirabominableschemesintoexecution.
