Itwasthe6thofMay,adaywhichcorrespondstothe6thofNovemberinthecountriesoftheNorthernHemisphere.Theskyhadbeenobscuredforsomedays,anditwasofimportancetomakepreparationsforthewinter.However,thetemperaturewasnotasyetmuchlower,andacentigradethermometer,transportedtoLincolnIsland,wouldstillhavemarkedanaverageoftentotwelvedegreesabovezero.Thiswasnotsurprising,sinceLincolnIsland,probablysituatedbetweenthethirty-fifthandfortiethparallel,wouldbesubject,intheSouthernHemisphere,tothesameclimateasSicilyorGreeceintheNorthernHemisphere.ButasGreeceandSicilyhaveseverecold,producingsnowandice,sodoubtlesswouldLincolnIslandintheseverestpartofthewinteranditwasadvisabletoprovideagainstit.
Inanycaseifcolddidnotyetthreatenthem,therainyseasonwouldbegin,andonthislonelyisland,exposedtoallthefuryoftheelements,inmid-ocean,badweatherwouldbefrequent,andprobablyterrible.ThequestionofamorecomfortabledwellingthantheChimneysmustthereforebeseriouslyconsideredandpromptlyresolvedon.
Pencroft,naturally,hadsomepredilectionfortheretreatwhichhehaddiscovered,buthewellunderstoodthatanothermustbefound.TheChimneyshadbeenalreadyvisitedbythesea,undercircumstanceswhichareknown,anditwouldnotdotobeexposedagaintoasimilaraccident.
