Theengineeroneeveningimpartedtohisfriendsaplanwhichhehadconceivedforfortifyingthecorral.Itappearedprudenttohimtoheightenthepalisadeandtoflankitwithasortofblockhouse,which,ifnecessary,thesettlerscouldholdagainsttheenemy.GraniteHousemight,byitsveryposition,beconsideredimpregnable;thereforethecorralwithitsbuildings,itsstores,andtheanimalsitcontained,wouldalwaysbetheobjectofpirates,whoevertheywere,whomightlandontheisland,andshouldthecolonistsbeobligedtoshutthemselvesuptheretheyoughtalsotobeabletodefendthemselveswithoutanydisadvantage.Thiswasaprojectwhichmightbeleftforconsideration,andtheywere,besides,obligedtoputoffitsexecutionuntilthenextspring.
