           DuringthedayHerbertdiscoveredseveralnewspecimensnotbeforemetwithintheisland,suchasthetree-fern,withitsleavesspreadoutlikethewatersofafountain,locust-trees,onthelongpodsofwhichtheonagersbrowsedgreedily,andwhichsuppliedasweetpulpofexcellentflavor.There,too,thecolonistsagainfoundgroupsofmagnificentkauries,theircylindricaltrunks,crowdedwithaconeofverdure,risingtoaheightoftwohundredfeet.Thesewerethetree-kingsofNewZealand,ascelebratedasthecedarsofLebanon.

           Astothefauna,therewasnoadditiontothosespeciesalreadyknowntothehunters.
