Itwasforothertracesthanthoseofanimalsthathesearchedthethicketsofthevastforest,butnothingsuspiciouseverappeared.NeitherTopnorJup,whoaccompaniedhim,everbetrayedbytheirbehaviorthattherewasanythingstrangethere,andyetmorethanonceagainthedogbarkedatthemouthofthewell,whichtheengineerhadbeforeexploredwithoutresult.
AtthistimeGideonSpilett,aidedbyHerbert,tookseveralviewsofthemostpicturesquepartsoftheisland,bymeansofthephotographicapparatusfoundinthecases,andofwhichtheyhadnotasyetmadeanyuse.
Thisapparatus,providedwithapowerfulobject-glass,wasverycomplete.Substancesnecessaryforthephotographicreproduction,collodionforpreparingtheglassplate,nitrateofsilvertorenderitsensitive,hyposulfateofsodatofixtheprintsobtained,chlorideofammoniuminwhichtosoakthepaperdestinedtogivethepositiveproof,acetateofsodaandchlorideofgoldinwhichtoimmersethepaper,nothingwaswanting.Eventhepaperswerethere,allprepared,andbeforelayingintheprinting-frameuponthenegatives,itwassufficienttosoakthemforafewminutesinthesolutionofnitrateofsilver.
