Duringthesestormsitwasdifficultandevendangeroustoventureout,owingtothefrequentlyfallingtrees;however,thecolonistsneverallowedaweektopasswithouthavingpaidavisittothecorral.Happily,thisenclosure,shelteredbythesoutheasternspurofMountFranklin,didnotgreatlysufferfromtheviolenceofthehurricanes,whichspareditstrees,sheds,andpalisades;butthepoultry-yardonProspectHeights,beingdirectlyexposedtothegustsofwindfromtheeast,sufferedconsiderabledamage.Thepigeon-housewastwiceunroofedandthepalingblowndown.Allthisrequiredtoberemademoresolidlythanbefore,for,asmaybeclearlyseen,LincolnIslandwassituatedinoneofthemostdangerouspartsofthePacific.Itreallyappearedasifitformedthecentralpointofvastcyclones,whichbeatitperpetuallyasthewhipdoesthetop,onlyhereitwasthetopwhichwasmotionlessandthewhipwhichmoved.DuringthefirstweekofthemonthofAugusttheweatherbecamemoremoderate,andtheatmosphererecoveredthecalmwhichitappearedtohavelostforever.
