Thebridgewasthemosturgentwork.Treeswereselected,cutdown,strippedoftheirbranches,andcutintobeams,joists,andplanks.TheendofthebridgewhichrestedontherightbankoftheMercywastobefirm,buttheotherendontheleftbankwastobemovable,sothatitmightberaisedbymeansofacounterpoise,assomecanalbridgesaremanaged.
Thiswascertainlyaconsiderablework,andthoughitwasskillfullyconducted,ittooksometime,fortheMercyatthisplacewaseightyfeetwide.Itwasthereforenecessarytofixpilesinthebedoftheriversoastosustainthefloorofthebridgeandestablishapile-drivertoactonthetopsofthesepiles,whichwouldthusformtwoarchesandallowthebridgetosupportheavyloads.
