Theengineer’sorderswereobeyed,andwhilethereporterandthelad,thebestmarksmeninthecolony,postedthemselvesinagoodposition,butoutofthemonkeys’sight,Neb,Pencroft,andCyrusclimbedtheplateauandenteredtheforestinordertokillsomegame,foritwasnowtimeforbreakfastandtheyhadnoprovisionsremaining.
Inhalfanhourthehuntersreturnedwithafewrockpigeons,whichtheyroastedaswellastheycould.Notanapehadappeared.GideonSpilettandHerbertwenttotaketheirshareofthebreakfast,leavingToptowatchunderthewindows.Theythen,havingeaten,returnedtotheirpost.
Twohourslater,theirsituationwasinnodegreeimproved.Thequadrumanagavenosignofexistence,anditmighthavebeensupposedthattheyhaddisappeared;butwhatseemedmoreprobablewasthat,terrifiedbythedeathofoneoftheircompanions,andfrightenedbythenoiseofthefirearms,theyhadretreatedtothebackpartofthehouseorprobablyevenintothestore-room.Andwhentheythoughtofthevaluableswhichthisstoreroomcontained,thepatiencesomuchrecommendedbytheengineer,fastchangedintogreatirritation,andtherecertainlywasroomforit.
